Blog 04: Heal Thyself

Layer Panels

Summary:

This week we have been working with healing, closing, patch tools, and layers. I have really enjoyed working with these specific tools in class and feel I am starting to gain more confidence and knowledge using photoshop. I decided to use another image of a tired baby to express the dreadful emotion of Mondays. My first image is what my meme looked like before I added layers.  I found my first image on the internet and then uploaded it to photoshop. From there, I added layers to make specific edits. I cropped the image , added text, and used the soft healing brush tool as well.

What I learned:

During this week's reading, I learned about the "spot healing brush tool" on photoshop and how it can remove unwanted content. The spot healing brush tool can "easily eliminate distracting elements” (Adobe Help). This tool is very beneficial to making your edit stronger.  I watched the video on Adobe Help on how to properly use this tool and then incorporated what I learned into my meme. I noticed in the first photo a fork on the baby's high chair. I thought this would be the perfect item to eliminate. I used the spot healing tool to carefully brush over the fork and it soon easily disappeared. Once I finished editing, I happened to notice the baby doing an inappropriate hand gesture. Sadly, I didn't notice until after I finished my meme and decided to go back in with my spot healing brush tool to eliminate this. I think both of these items are very distracting to viewers and draws the main focus away, which is the baby. I think I did ok eliminating these items, although I think these edits could be a little softer in some spots. Next time I will go even closer to the objects in the image to eliminate more carefully.

The next tool I learned was cropping and straightening. My first image you can clearly see a white border at the bottom with the website name. I knew I wanted to eliminate this and after watching the crop and strengthening video I knew this tool would be perfect. Crop and straighten tools can "trim edges, change the shape and size of a photo" (Adobe Help). I used the crop tool to crop the white border out of the photo. I think I did really well eliminating the border and the meme looks a lot neater. I even added text saying “Mondays” to help express the emotion of mondays.I did this for our last meme assignment but I think it goes well with this specific meme too.

Conclusion:

Overall, I think I did well on this week's blog assignment. I think my meme is well organized and clearly demonstrates a clear attempt on the skills we have focused on. I hope to continue to practice these skills and use them on our upcoming major assignment.
